Billions of Cicadas Expected to Emerge in 2024

Dual Brood Appearance Not Seen Since 1803

Prepare for Cicada Season

BALTIMORE (CBS Baltimore) — Get ready for a rare event this spring as billions of cicadas are expected to emerge in the Midwest and the Southeast. This will be the first dual appearance of two broods of cicadas since 1803.

Cicadas are large, noisy insects that live underground for most of their lives. Every 13 or 17 years, they emerge in large numbers to mate and lay eggs. This year, Brood X and Brood XIX will emerge together, creating a massive population of cicadas.

While cicadas are not harmful to humans, they can be a nuisance. Their loud buzzing can be disruptive, and they can leave behind sticky honeydew that can damage plants.

Experts recommend taking steps to prepare for cicada season, such as closing windows at night to keep them out of your home, covering plants to protect them from honeydew, and avoiding areas where cicadas are congregating.
